Understanding blouse silhouettes

Six shapes, what each one does for a frame, and when a designer will quietly talk you out of one.

Three blouse silhouettes laid out on the cutting table

Blouse silhouettes are usually presented as a catalogue of necklines. They are better understood as a set of decisions about where you want the eye to stop.

The high neck

Lengthens the line of the neck when the sleeve is kept narrow. It needs a shallow armhole to avoid looking severe, and it is the most forgiving choice for a long ceremony.

The sculpted back

A deep back works only when the bodice is canvassed and the straps are engineered. Without that structure it will move all evening and you will spend the evening adjusting it.

The elbow sleeve

The most useful sleeve in Indian couture. It flatters almost every arm, and it gives embroidery somewhere to sit without crowding the neckline.
