Fabric stories: raw silk

Why the house returns to raw silk for bridal work, and where it is the wrong choice.

9 January 2026

Rolls of raw silk in plum, ivory and champagne

Raw silk holds a colour the way no other fabric in our cupboard does. Imperial plum on raw silk reads as depth; the same dye on a satin reads as shine, and shine is not what this house is after.

Where it works

Structured bodices, panelled skirts, anything that should hold a line. It takes canvassing well and it does not slip under the needle.

Where it does not

Anything that must fall softly. A draped gown in raw silk will look like architecture, which is occasionally the point and usually not.
